Congratulations to our post-graduate students on Poster Award at 8th African Population Conference Held in Entebbe in November, 2019
The University of Nairobi and the Office of the DVC RIE would like to congratulate and recognize our three students who participated and won an award for Poster Presentation at the 8th African Population Conference Held in Entebbe in November, 2019 Under the theme “Harnessing Africa’s Population Dynamics for Sustainable Development: 25 Years After Cairo And Beyond”. Mr. Bernard Kiprotich, Mr. Caleb Ouma Ongong’a and Mr. Anthony Okundi managed to make the University of Nairobi proud as they showcased their prowess in their various areas of specialization. Below are their biographies in brief.
Mr. Bernard Kiprotich is currently undertaking a Master of Science Degree in Population Studies at University of Nairobi at the Population Studies and Research Institute (PSRI). He holds a post graduate diploma in Population and Policy Analysis from North West University -Mafikeng Campus in South Africa and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Population Studies from Makerere University-Uganda. He is currently working with the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) as Population Programme Officer under Policy and Research Division and has extensive Knowledge and skills in statistical data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Further, Mr. Kiprotich has participated and supervised several surveys while working at National Council for Population and Development.

Prior to his employment with NCPD, he worked as Research Assistant and Supervisor with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics in 2013 Kenya Health Household Utilization and Expenditure Survey (KHHEUS) and 2009 Census. He has also worked with the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) currently Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as a clerk and Deputy Presiding Officer during elections.
Mr. Caleb Ouma Ongong’a is a third year Ph.D. student at the Population Studies and Research Institute (PSRI). His major research interests are Population policy, fertility dynamics and modelling. He holds a BSc (Statistics) and MSc (Population studies) from the University of Nairobi. His dissertation proposal examines the Fertility Transition in Sub-Saharan Africa. The poster presentation at Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) conference emphasized on the use of parity distribution model as a demographics technique in explaining fertility behavior. Before commencing his graduate studies, Mr. Ongong’a worked at GIBB International as the senior socio-economist. A keen researcher and writer on wider population issues, Mr. Ongong’a has various articles which have appeared in the local dailies.
Mr. Antony Okundi is a holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Urban & Regional Planning from the University of Nairobi. He is a Planner and Geospatial analyst who has unlimited interest in Urban, Infrastructural, Institutional Planning, and applied Geographic Information Systems in solving planning problems. He has experience as a geo-designer for local governments and is the Co-founder of the Organization for Sustainable Environmental Protection (OSEP). He spends the better part of his day carrying out GIS programming and its application in optimizing service provision in the community. He has presented scientific papers in Conferences such as Esri User Conference 2017, RCMRD international Conference (15th - 17th August 2018), the 2nd Biennial Conference (31st October - 2nd November 2018) and the African Population Conference (17th - 23rd November 2019). He has two publications under his name. Below is one his posters.
The paper focuses on the social, economic, infrastructural and environmental implications of the satellite campuses and the most appropriate panacea to arrest the induced roller coaster of space contestations. It also adopts a case study approach to illuminate the attraction factors and impacts of campuses and provide an entry point for empirical decision making and solution prescription and presents a silver bullet approach in ameliorating the place-based tensions in Nairobi Central Business District by designating campus districts, developing Convenient, Contextual, Cohesive, Ecological and Integrated Campus district models, campus and building prototypes.
