Every year on 28th July, we mark World Hepatitis Day. The running call for this year’s celebration is to encourage every person from across the globe to act and raise awareness to “find the missing millions”. It is a significant day as it is the birthday of the Nobel-Prize scientist, Dr Baruch Blumberg, who discovered the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) in 1965. His research and dedication saw him develop both the Hepatitis B virus diagnostic test and a vaccine.
On this day governments and international community aim to create awareness and to build a global response towards the eradication of HBV. World Health Organization (WHO) developed a Hepatitis Response Guideline 2017 which aims to reduce global hepatitis deaths by 65% and new infections by 90% come 2030. In this article, we discuss more on Hepatitis B virus infection given that it is one of the major contributors of viral hepatitis and liver cancer.
