Preparation and Submission Positional Literature Review Papers on NCDs in Sub-Saharan Africa

The ARUA Center of Excellence on Non-Communicable Diseases is seeking three research teams to carry out and prepare for journal publication, at least three positional literature reviews on non-communicable diseases (excluding cardiovascular diseases).

The reviews should be focused on either one of the two themes of prevention and multi-morbidity:

  1. Prevention – Much of the increase in NCDs in Sub-Saharan Africa is due to rapid unplanned urbanization, deteriorating environments, population ageing, and lifestyle changes such as decreasing physical activity, obesity, tobacco use, and increasing consumption of alcohol and unhealthy foods. The ACE-NCD approach to prevention of NCDs is modelled after the WHO three-pronged approach that includes epidemiological surveillance, and primary and secondary prevention targeted at preventing complications and improving the quality of life through public health, medical, psychosocial and/or economic interventions.
  2. Multi-morbidity – There is a high prevalence of NCDs multi- morbidity, ‘the coexistence of more than one chronic non-communicable disease in an individual at any one point’. NCD health seeking behaviour is symptom driven, thus asymptomatic disease conditions receive very little attention, both at individual level and amongst health systems’ planners because the need is masked. There is a need to conduct research to understand the social determinants, the magnitude of the problem, characterizing it, defining pathways of progression of the disease conditions, detect coexistence of and interactions between NCD and infectious diseases and health system capacity to manage multi-morbidity.

The literature review should focus on sub-Saharan Africa, with an emphasis on Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda. Teams must be led by researchers from any one of the ACE-NCD Universities (University of Ghana, University of Nairobi, University of Ibadan, Witwatersrand University, Makerere University) and include collaborators from at least one other country.

We are looking to fund three positional literature review papers.
