University of Helsinki visited the University of Nairobi to continue to tackle issues in one health, teacher education and food security, and give all the support to make all the activities a success.
In 2015 Prof. Olli Vapalahti (UH) and Omu Anzala (UoN) initiated the One Health collaboration.
This was after the two were introduced in 2013 by Prof. Petri Pellikka who had initiated collaboration with UoN Department of Geography in 2002, later signing the first UoN-UH MoU in 2011.
Collaboration has since grown to include other collaborators (National Museums of Kenya, Kenya Wildlife Service, Maasai Mara University, Umeå University, Sweden, and University of Arkansas, USA.The collaboration is also supporting PhD students from Kenya, Finland and USA.
The Early Career Champions mentorship program began in 2021 comprising 6 and 5 PhD students (mentees) from the University of Nairobi and University of Helsinki respectively and 6 and 10 faculty members (mentors) from the University of Nairobi and University of Helsinki respectively. The mentorship program was made of up webinars every two months and two physical workshops, one in Helsinki in May 2022 and the current one in Nairobi in Nov-Dec 2022. It covered various topics in research such as the research career journey, switching from academia to industry, research translation into policy, balancing research and administration and biotech companies in One Health.
