Understanding Innovation Policy Makers in Kenya

A team led by Prof. Madara Ogot through the Global Innovation Policy Accelerator programme (GIPA),  supported by NESTA (UK) sought to develop a deep understanding of Kenya’s innovation policymakers, their context, needs, challenges and activities, as a precursor to developing  innovation policies that match the society’s ambitions. The completed report highlights what has been learned about the challenges and priorities of innovation policymakers working in Kenya. The main findings help understand and interpret the Kenyan science, technology and innovation system.

The report is the culmination of many conversations and interviews with different innovation policymakers in the Kenyan innovation system, across a number of government departments. This report has quotes from those conversations that we have kept anonymous. Note that the original review and research was undertaken in 2019, and many facts and figures date from that point. Team members were Rita Muriuki, Timothy Waema, and Tonny Omwansa (University of Nairobi) and Nathan Kably and Benjamin Reid (NESTA).

In addition to Kenya, the GIPA have been working with policymakers across Latin America, India, South East Asia, Brazil, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and South Africa. Through their work, a lot has been learn’t about the innovation policy systems in these countries.
