National Geographic Society Grant Programme: Level II

Funding for experienced conservationists and researchers, including existing National Geographic Explorers, who are seeking to undertake bold, innovative, and transformative projects based on research, conservation, education, storytelling and technology that address priority research topics of interest to the National Geographic Society.

The National Geographic Society Grants support bold, innovative, and transformative projects across various aspects of conservation, education, research, storytelling, and technology.

Following the suspension of its grants program in 2020 due to the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic, the National Geographic Society has launched an updated version of its grants, aligned with its strategic plan – NG Next – with a new two-tier funding structure and new focus areas. The updated funding strategy will also focus on awarding fewer grants per year, but with higher dollar amounts per grant.

The Level II Grants replace the previous Exploration Grants and are intended to support individuals who are more established in their field and are seeking a higher level of funding to develop their work to push boundaries in their field or discipline and achieve significant and tangible impact.
