We are looking for a person who will assess the environmental and economic impacts when establishing new bio-based value chains in Southern African countries.
The work consists of quantifying and assessing the potential impacts from a system perspective using life cycle assessment (LCA). An important part of the work is to assess the carbon flows in the bush-encroached savannah ecosystem and throughout the product value chains as new bio-based products replace other products in local households and industries. The work also includes method development for how to improve environmental LCAs to better reflect local stakeholder preferences in African contexts. The focus of the work will be on harvest, transformation, sales and end-use of encroaching and invasive bush as well as the restoration of the affected savannah regions across Namibia, Botswana and South Africa to productive land. This will generate jobs, increase energy security, mitigate climate impacts and lead to long term social, economic, and environmental benefits across the region. You will work in a larger research group at SLU and collaborate with research groups at other European and African institutions as well as with companies engaged in the biomass and bioenergy sector.
