THE KENYA NATIONAL NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE CENTRE (KNMRC) HANDS-ON NMR TRAINING WORKSHOP

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY, FACULTY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY ON 31ST JULY 2023.

On behalf of Prof Margaret J. Hutchinson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation And  Enterprise (RIE), Prof Justus Munyoki, Director for Research welcomed  all those online and those attending in person- to the very historic ceremony, Inaugural hands-on KNMRC NMR training workshop organized by the Department of Chemistry.

Prof Munyoki  particularly singled out the financing received from the National Research Funds for infrastructure support to establish the Kenya National Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Centre (KNMRC), as well as the Royal Society of Chemistry for sponsoring three NMR training workshops.

Previously, the inaugural KNMRC Webinar was held virtually on August 12th 2021 during COVID-19 pandemic to sensitize all stakeholders regarding services provided by KNMRC. More than 322 participants from Universities, Research Institutes, and Industries from different countries registered for the first webinar demonstrating the high demand for NMR services in the region. Since then two hands-on NMR training workshops have been held successfully from May 24 to 27, 2022 and from October 4 to 7, 2022 with support from the Royal Society of ChemistryUniversities are about establishing collaborations and partnerships.

Prof Munyoki encouraged them to  continue to work with partners like the NRF Kenya, Royal Society of Chemistry, Pan African Chemistry Network (PACN) and others to equip Kenyan and African scientists with the knowledge and skills in the use and applications of this very important analytical NMR technique in various fields such as Drug discovery from medicinal plants, agriculture and industrial applications

The Regional hands-on NMR training will  take place soon after the commissioning of the KNMRC facility which goes a long way in strengthening collaboration among universities, community engagements, stakeholders, industry and other partners.
