University's Annual Tree Planting

April 2, 2026,  at Upper Kabete Field Station.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RIE), Prof. Leonidah Kerubo Omosa ready to plant the tree

The Annual Tree Planting and Growing Ceremony at the University of Nairobi’s Upper Kabete Campus marked a significant milestone in the institution’s journey toward environmental stewardship. Led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, the event brought together university management, staff, and students at the Kantaria Agricultural Technology & Innovation Centre (KATIC).

This year’s initiative was supported by a powerful coalition of partners, including Safaricom PLC, NACOSTI, NRF Kenya, Elgon Kenya Limited, Green Army Kenya, and Go Green, all united under a shared vision of climate resilience.

The day was defined by "action over words," as the UoN community successfully planted over 250 indigenous avocado fruit trees at the Kabete Station. Choosing indigenous fruit trees was a strategic move, designed to serve a dual purpose: restoring the local ecosystem through reforestation while simultaneously contributing to future food security. As Prof. Hutchinson noted, each seedling represents a tangible step toward a more resilient and sustainable ecosystem, transforming the campus into a "green lung" for the surrounding Nairobi area.

The event concluded with a call to maintain this momentum, ensuring that these trees are not just planted but grown to maturity, securing a greener, more sustainable tomorrow for the community.
