The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the social policy weaknesses of the devolved units of government as well as the absence of a coherent core across the different social development programmes of the National Government. For instance, the different social protection instruments implemented by the National Government but consumed at counties did not demonstrate a coordinated flow to be rapidly marshaled and deployed to address the pandemic-related crises.
The COVID-19 pandemic was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 30 January 2020. Globally, health workers are at the front line of the interventions to combat COVID-19. While it is well known that healthcare workers (HCWs) risk contracting infectious diseases, the nature of COVID-19 exposes HCWs to new levels of risk.
While the medical experts and financial analysts/actuaries have always disagreed publicly on whether it was prudent for Kenya to open its economy, especially with the rising number of COVID-19 pandemic cases, as a certified financial analyst and actuary, I would confidently say that it was an excellent idea despite disagreement from many medics.
We are delighted to announce that in line with Kenya’s vision of food security, a multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder team led by the University of Nairobi has won a grant from the National Research Fund. Kenya faces severe chronic food insecurity and poor nutrition. Improving food security and nutrition in Kenya requires renewed efforts through new farming technologies. Little information exists on such innovative technologies. A multidisciplinary team led by our own Dr.
While the Coronavirus (COVID-19) started in China, its wings have spread globally with little trace of the virus left in China. The continent of Asia in which China is located has also been hit hard. But China seems to be out of the pandemic box in escaping the wrath of the virus.
A multi-university team led by Dr. Richard Ayah, Director of the Science and Technology Park and a member of the School of Public Health, have been awarded a three-year grant from the National Research Fund to investigate and pilot a Waste to Healthcare Value Chain.
Universities and other education institutions in Kenya were ordered closed by His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta on March 15th, 2020, with a closure deadline of March 20th. This was in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic and the confirmation of the first case in Kenya on March 13, 2020.
Spouse abuse (SA) refers to a phenomenon that is commonly known as domestic violence. It is also variously referred to as family violence, domestic dispute, intimate partner violence, wife abuse, wife battering, husband battering, gender based violence and many other terminologies in various parts of the world. Spouse abuse also refers to violence between intimates living together or who have previously cohabited (Buzawa and Buzawa, 2003).
